Adoption Agency Selection Checklist

It was March of 1996 that the first draft of this checklist was placed online. It has been used by thousands since then and, with the feedback received since 1996, it has been shortened and simplified. There are now 5 questions most easily answered by using the yellow pages, or other agency advertisements such as web pages, and then 11 questions that will probably require a phone call to the agency. There is no difference if you are placing a child you are expecting or if you are wanting to adopt a child into your family. Either way you must select the agency very carefully for the sake of your child.

You must also be concerned as to how the adopting parents of your child, or the birthmother of your child, will be treated by the agency you select. It is a VERY important decision.

As you are calling agencies and asking questions about the issues from this checklist, it is very possible that the staff will recognize that you are using this checklist. Do not let that distract you from the critical issues addressed in the checklist. Just acknowledge that you are using the "openadoption.org checklist" and that you want to go over the issues one by one. The issues are infinitely more important than the source of the checklist you are using. The way agency staff treat you, and your concerns, will tell you as much about an agency as the written agency policies.

A PDF copy of the Adoption Agency Selection Checklist for printing can be found at www.openadoption.org/checklst.htm It will print out to one page and have 4 columns to compare multiple agencies. You may then take notes on the printed copy as you study agency advertisements and call agencies.

Adoption Agency Selection Checklist

After studying the www.openadoption.org web pages to understand the issues involved, this form can be used to compare four agencies. The more ?Yes? answers to the questions that follow the better an agency is. Few agencies will get ?Yes? answers to all 16 questions, and some questions are more important.

1. Do the agency web site & advertisements make it clear that the agency only does fully open, fully identified adoptions?

2. Is this agency easy to drive to from your home?

3. Do you have a friend who knows or has used this agency and gives it a very high recommendation?

4. Are there other agencies in your local yellow pages who have much larger yellow page ads under the adoption heading?

5. Is the agency a church affiliated agency or is it over 30 years old?

Most of the above questions can be answered from agency web sites, yellow pages, and other advertisements without calling the agency. The questions below will probably require a call to the agency, but count it as extra good if positive answers can be found in agency advertisements. Count it as negative if there is any hesitation by agency staff on the phone in answering these questions.

6. Does the agency encourage maternity client parenting and offer free support and guidance in parenting?

7. Did agency staff accurately define open adoption as involving no secrets between birth and adopting families, and ongoing, direct, in person contact between them?

8. Did agency staff make it clear that they prefer to do fully open adoptions and rarely, if at all, will they serve an adopting family wanting less than a fully open adoption?

9. Does the agency strongly recommend, or even require, several counseling sessions by their staff before a maternity client starts considering the selection of a family for their child?

10. Does the agency always allow maternity clients selecting a family for their child to be able study every waiting family available through the agency for their child, and almost never limits maternity clients to selecting from a few waiting families chosen by agency staff?

11. Does the agency encourage matching between birth and adopting families who live close enough to each other for easy visits?

12. Does the agency have resumes by families adopting that are fully identified, with full names and addresses as well as local phone numbers on them, freely available for the selection process?

13. Does the agency provide a copy of their adopting parent fee agreement with clearly stated policies both about refunds and that donations cannot be accepted during the adoption process?

14. Does the original fee amount also cover all birthmother expenses anticipated with the agency paying any extra expenses?

15. Is agency a member of the Child Welfare League of America?

16. Is the race of the child expected one of the last questions asked?

Total the Number of "Yes" answers and compair.

Check Printing Services

Printing costs are escalating and any company out there may see this as a major burden. Many individuals cannot simply do away with personal checks, as they see this as a more secure way of dealing with money than carrying around large amounts of cash in their bags or pockets. If checks are that important for personal use, how much more do they mean to entrepreneurs out there whose company operations revolve entirely around their business checks?

Why Check Printing Services?

Check printing services are in high demand, especially by those folks moving about in the business arena. In the absence of check printing services, bookkeepers and the accounting people will encounter many obstacles when it comes to handling the company expenditures and financial assets.

Valuable Check Printing Services

Check printing services can be acquired by placing orders with check printing companies. Most printing services set a limit of copies for a printing order to push through. There are those, however, known as the short-run printers that allow small quantities of orders to be placed.

Discount check printers that thrive on the Internet provide a wide range of check personalization options that include the incorporation of images in the body of the check.

If you desire to print checks on your own, you can always purchase and utilize check printing software that works well with the existing accounting software that your office uses.

Check printing provides access to various check forms and templates, custom logos, pertinent check data, and signatures to be imprinted. There's no need to rerun the checks and waste time signing the checks.

Check printing services are offered by printing companies that specialize in this trade. In most cases, their services are rendered at discounted rates.

Check Printing provides detailed information on Check Printing, Check Printing Companies, Check Printing Software, Business Check Printing and more. Check Printing is affiliated with Checking Accounts.

Camping Checklist

Last time I went camping, I wish I had been more resourceful to "spice up" the most exciting adventure I have experienced during my stay at one of the best camping facilities I have ever visited; that of a sandy beach. Although I always leave my house to go camping after checking everything from my list of things I wanted to take and I make sure that my car gas will last for at least some considerable part of the journey, I prefer while being at the camping spot of my choice, not to do plan or schedule anything. Just do whatever I feel like whenever I feel like it.

But people do not always agree with my plans and this is usually the time when each one has to find his or her own tree to place the tent that will host his or her existence for the duration of the trip. This is not a joke. When I reach my destination and check my camping list I try to relax completely and avoid organizing every single moment of my vacations. In case people wish to continue doing so, I have no objection but I will simply not follow if I do not wish to. So, regardless of the kind of camper you are, I would strongly recommend for you to consider making your own camping checklist and use it every time you are getting ready to for your next camping adventure. A little advanced planning will make your camping trip easier and your life simpler. Then it is always feasible to forget the organizational freak you hide inside somewhere across the shore and enjoy your vacations accompanied by your closest friends and partner.

There are several categories of gear you might need, so it is better if you begin by categorizing items according to their main category: basics, fire building, dinning and cooking, lighting, and miscellaneous equipment or extra items you might not think of carrying with until you realize you needed them.

Among the basic items is the tent, a sleeping bag, a simple camping stove, food and water. But apart from the necessary items, other gear can accommodate you during your camping time and help you feel more like home. For example, your list may include, plastic ground sheets, an air mattress, plastic storage boxes, blanket, folding tables and chairs, pillows, a first aid kit, rope and scissors, a well-working knife, a hummer and a shovel, sunscreen, toilet paper, insect repellent spray, towels and washcloths. For your kitchen supplies you might need a can and a bottle opener, cookware, cutlery for preparing food, a lighter/matches, the appropriate fuel for the camping stove, dishwashing detergent, a coffee maker, a thermos, tablecloth, a pot holder, utensils, plastic garbage bags and aluminum foil. In addition, if you wish to be able to see where you are going during the night it is important for you to bring more than one flashlight and plenty of batteries. Before buying lamps make sure you can carry the gas or liquid they use. Moreover, you will probably need to pack a screwdriver, a bottle and a can opener, a pair of tweezers and scissors. Miscellaneous things include a sewing kit, reading material (I would put this right after the tent), paper and pen (and then this would follow) or a battery-operated clock.

Online Dating - A Reality Check!

As CEO of a company which operates some of the most popular dating sites on the net, I'm uniquely positioned to provide some clear and concise facts about the global phenomenon of online dating. In six bite-sized chunks I'm going to give you the whole truth about a past-time that has become part of the fabric of the lives of single people everywhere where a computer screen is affordable by, or accessible to the masses.

1. Two out of every five single people aged 24 - 50 currently use, or have used an online dating service. Yes, you read that correctly - it's 40%! Now think of all the single friends you have; how many of them have actually told you that they've signed-up to a site in order to kick start their love lives? Not many I would wager. That's because in spite of the popularity of the medium, there is a still a social stigma attached to dating sites; when people meet a partner this way, they generally pretend to their friends that they've met in a bar or at some kind of party or work related function. One of the fastest growing activities in the world is still something most people wont admit to doing.

2. Only about 5% of people who join dating sites actually end up in a relationship with someone they first make contact with at their chosen site. Let's equate this to the 'real' world; you walk into a room full of one hundred strangers and how many of them would you be attracted to? Probably no more than ten. And that's if you're lucky. It's the same in cyberspace - how many total strangers will there be on any site that really press all the right buttons for you? So when you register with a site, don't expect miracles because your love life in cyberspace is no different to the reality of everyday life.

3. Only 10% of people who join dating sites get any messages at all from other members. There's a reason for this - the other 90% don't deserve any success. People who refuse to upload photos of themselves or post profiles which look like they can't really be bothered to say anything about themselves will just be ignored. The 10% who get noticed create upbeat, confident, humorous profiles, don't have any qualms about posting a picture of themselves and are proactive about contacting other members. If your site doesn't work for you, you shouldn't blame the site just as a bad workman shouldn't blame his tools.

4. Popular dating sites are popular for one reason and one reason only. They work. In every territory, you'll find a handful of sites that outstrip all the others in terms of the volume of their registrations and their reputations in general. You'll also find that none of these sites are free. The sites which look the best, have the best features and offer good customer service are expensive to run and maintain. You get what you pay for on line as well as in all walks of life; if the owners of a dating site don't have the confidence in their product to actually charge for it, you have to ask yourself why that is. Relatively speaking, joining a dating site is very inexpensive compared to, say, going out for a nice meal or taking a trip to the theatre and the potential of finding a great new relationship makes the risk/reward ratio a no-brainer.

5. Global sites which can boast hundreds of thousands of members from all four corners of the globe are a waste of time unless you're looking for a pen-pal. These sites might sound rather impressive - "We have 5,000,000 members worldwide!!" - but so what? What you should be concerned with when you're choosing a site is how many members they have in your city, your town or your village. So if you're serious about finding a partner, stick to city or country specific sites like CupidNights.com and take the 'global' hype with a pinch of salt.

6. The percentage of men on dating sites is disproportionate to that of women. Most services comprise about 60% men and 40% women so as far as the on line arena is concerned, it's the girls who are calling the shots. They have more choice and can therefore be more discerning about who they contact or write back to. So guys, if you want to stand out from the crowd, check out paragraph 3 above; write a great profile and post a flattering pic and you'll be just fine.

So there you have it; to make a success of online dating, all you have to do is pick the right site and post an eye-catching profile and photo and if it works for you...don't keep it a big secret - tell your single friends all about it so they can get a piece of the action too!

Tips to make checking in your luggage a breeze

Now that even more restrictions have been placed on what can go in carryon luggage, more people are finding it necessary to check their luggage on flights. Unless you plan on purchasing all new toiletries after your plane has landed and abandoning them before you make your return trip, checking your luggage is the only way to make sure you've got everything you need on your trip. If you find yourself in the position where you have to check your luggage, here are some tips to make it as smooth as possible.

  • Once you've purchased your tickets, you'll want to find out how many pieces of carry on luggage you can take with you and what they can way. Often this can be found on your ticket or the confirmation you've received via e-mail or fax. If you can bring two pieces of luggage, somewhere you will see the code 2PC (or 3PC if you can bring 3 pieces of luggage, etc.). You will also see a weight specification in pounds or kilograms. If you can't find this information on your paperwork, contact your travel agent or the airline, and they should be able to give you the information.

  • Stay within the airline's allowance for baggage. If you are over, one of two things can happen. The airline can deny acceptance of your luggage, or more likely, they will charge you an overage fee when you are checking in.

  • Find out the three letter code of the airport that you are flying into. When the handler checks your luggage, make sure the correct code is being put on the tag that gets attached to your luggage. It's one small way you can help avoid having your luggage lost. Unfortunately, if you have a connecting flight, you can't check the next code on your luggage, but at least it will at least get to your first stop with you.

  • If you do have connecting flights, mention that to the baggage checker. It doesn't guarantee your luggage will follow you all the way, but at least the checker will be aware of what needs to be done with it.<br >

  • Place your contact information on the outside and inside of each bag. Luggage tags are great, but they can get separated from your luggage. If you have your contact information on the inside of your luggage, it will be easier for the airline to match it up to you if the outside tags do get lost. It's a good idea to do this with bags you plan to carry on also, because you never know when you may be required to check a bag you planned to carry on.

    >

  • Put something on the outside of your bag to easily identify it. Some people put colored ribbons on their bags to easily identify them on the baggage carousel. Using an identifier makes it easy to spot your luggage and will help keep others from picking up your luggage by mistake.<br >

  • Guard the stubs from your checked luggage. If your luggage is lost, you will need them.

  • If your bag doesn't end up with you, report it immediately. Most bags do eventually get returned and the odds are even better if you report the lost bag(s) as soon as possible.

With the increased security for electronic items, many passengers may also be finding themselves forced to check their cell phones, MP3 players, PDA's, and laptop computers. This is a concern for many travelers for two reasons. First they are concerned about their electronic equipment arriving at their destination in workable conditions. Second, they are worried about the theft of their devices, which could be disastrous, especially for business travelers.

If you know that you are going to have to check, you should make sure you have the proper cases to do so. Even if you don't think you will have to, recent events have shown that sometimes these items may have to be checked at the last minute. Your best bet is to pack them as if you were going to have to check them. Here are some tips on packing your electronic equipment safely.

  • For cell phones, MP3 players, PDA's and other small devices, make sure that you have a padded section of your luggage that you can slip them into. This could simply be in the middle of your clothing. If you are really concerned about it, carry some bubble wrap in your suitcase that you can slip the devices into before placing them in the middle of the clothing.

  • For laptops, the concern is much greater. Baggage handlers aren't known to be gentle with your luggage, and a laptop is going to get thrown around often so choose a case carefully. You need a durable, lockable, hard case with high-impact foam. You should be able to drop the case from 4 to 6 feet with damaging the contents inside.

A final concern for checked luggage is locking it. With today's security, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may open luggage at any time to inspect it, even after it has been checked. This means that they can break open any lock at any time, and your luggage could be returned with a broken lock. If you don't want this, here's what you can do.

  • Purchase a TSA approved suitcase lock. They are combination locks that allow you to program a personal code to open them. They can also be opened by a key that TSA officials have. That way, the TSA can open your bag, check through it, and relock it. Anyone without the key or the combination cannot get into your bag. If the lock is opened with a TSA key, a security light changes from green to red alerting you that the lock was opened. Also, if the TSA does open your locked luggage, they are required to insert a slip of paper telling you they have done so.

A 20-Point Checklist for New Home Businesses

You're eager to start your home business and bring in some extra income. Although you're probably bursting with ideas and enthusiasm and want to jump right in, take some time to plan and prepare for your new venture.

Here's a simple checklist you can use in the startup phase of your home based business. Feel free to add additional checkpoints of your own!

1) Assess your personality. Are you the entrepreneurial type that will do well with your own business? Are you self-motivated, disciplined, and willing and able to put forth the effort, time, and money? Are you the type that can get up after a failure and try again? There are many quizzes available to help you decide whether or not you're ready for a home business. Try http://quiz.ivillage.com/work/tests/areyouready.htm

2) Appraise your skills, knowledge, and experience. Make a list of businesses you think you would be capable of building.

3) Know your interests. If you're doing something you love, you are more likely to work harder and enjoy yourself. A good place to find unique business ideas is here: http://homebasedwork.com/cgi-bin/a/t.cgi?bizideas

4) Figure out what type of business you want to run. Out of the huge number of possibilities, select one that works well with your skills and your interests. An excellent manual with 16 different Internet 'business models' that you can copy is available at http://buildyourhomebiz.com/rd/senze.html

5) Do some market research. Is there a demand for the product you plan to sell, and at the price at which you want to sell it? After your (projected) expenses, will you be profitable?

6) Check out your competitors. How will you distinguish yourself from them? Why should customers come to you instead of to them? What are they doing right or wrong, and how can you improve upon them?

7) Select a business name. Make sure you don't infringe upon someone's trademark! You can research trademarks at http://www.marksonline.com/ . Consult with a qualified legal professional for more information.

8) Know the zoning regulations in your area. Make sure that you are permitted to operate a business from your home. Some areas may also place restrictions on the type of business that can be operated from your home.

9) Find out what licenses, registration, or permits you need to operate your home based business.

10) Research any additional regulations applicable to your product. Find out if there are restrictions on producing it from your home. For example, if you're a caterer, the authorities may not allow you to prepare food in your home if you have pets running around!

11) Select a business structure, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation. Again, you may want to consult with a qualified professional to determine what's best for your specific situation.

12) Assess your financial situation. Do you have enough to finance a business startup? How will you handle emergencies? Don't forget about marketing expenses -- the success of your business will depend in large part on how well you market it.

13) Secure additional funds, if necessary. Loans, lines of credit, grants, savings, and employment income are some ways that entrepreneurs can finance their businesses. The US Small Business Administration has a useful list: http://www.sba.gov/starting/indexspecial.html

14) Prepare a business plan to help you define your goals and stay focused. Again, the US SBA offers help at http://www.sba.gov/starting/indexbusplans.html

15) Investigate the costs associated with purchasing the necessary equipment, materials, and supplies. Contact several suppliers to compare quality, prices, and service.

16) Talk to your local tax office. Ask for any relevant information on how your home business will affect your tax situation.

17) Consider purchasing additional insurance to cover your business assets.

18) Set up your home office. Establish rules and 'office hours', when customers can generally expect to reach you. Consider setting aside a room specifically for your office space.

19) Talk to your bank about a business account, to keep your business and personal income and expenses separate.

20) Consult with professionals. Depending on your situation, you may need to use the services of lawyers, accountants or bookkeepers, insurance agents or brokers, and others.

For additional information, read the US Small Business Administration's 'Small Business Startup Kit' available at http://www.sba.gov/starting/indexstartup.html .
